This is the problem with teen dramas. Teens grow up, and so do the actors. Although, by its very nature, acting requires pretending to be someone else, it can get tedious for an adult to continue to play someone many years their junior. And when it’s on a continuous basis for a television series, it can get old very quickly. And that seems to be what’s happening with certain Gossip Girl cast members. Can they be replaced, or is the show nearing its end?
Leighton Meester was the first one to come out and talk about the end of her character, and possibly the show. In an interview last December, she responded to a question about the possibility of her leaving with, “Two more years,” and attributed that time frame merely to a contractual stipulation, not any sort of life plan. Sort of makes it sound like she’s merely fulfilling an obligation, and not really staying on Gossip Girl because she loves it or wants to further explore her character. When she was asked whether the show would also end in two years, she responded, “I don’t know, but I think there’s that old saying about wanting to go out on top.”
Then Ed Westwick. In the March issue of the British magazine Tatler, he apparently tells an interviewer that he no longer feels connected to his character, and that he’s ready to move on and do something else. Ouch. You have to wonder how Gossip Girl‘s producers are going to take that. It’s one thing to talk about when your contract is up. It’s quite another to basically say you’d quit if you could.
When actors on favorite shows start getting cabin fever, public sentiment usually runs one of two ways. There’s the understanding that no one wants to be stuck doing something they no longer enjoy. The show is hot right now, and the lead actors must be getting a slew of very attractive offers for other projects. There are few things worse than having to turn down a dream job because you’re stuck. Who hasn’t been there, right?
But the other side of the coin is, this show made some of those actors the names they are. It’s Gossip Girl that brought about their fame, notoriety, and wealth, and to turn their noses up at it now, and talk about leaving fans in the lurch doesn’t sit too well with a lot of people.
So what happens if the show does end in two years? Well, you can be comforted by the fact that you can always watch Gossip Girl online. Then you can either follow your favorite actors to their new projects, or you can abandon them the way they seem to be ready to abandon the show that made them famous.
